Asperger's Syndrome
Definition:
Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is classified under the IDEA definition of Autism. The IDEA defines Autism as "developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age three, that adversely affects a child's educational performance." Asperger's differs from Autism Spectrum Disorder by causing no speech delay and no "clinically significant" cognitive delay. Children with AS often have average to above average intelligence. (IDEA-Building the Legacy of IDEA 2004, 2006).
Asperger's was first identified and listed as separate from Autism in 1994 in the DSM-IV. (IDEA-Building the Legacy of IDEA 2004, 2006).
Below, two students describe what living with Asperger's is like and how you can't tells someone has AS "just by looking at them."
