Scenarios:
- I have a student in my class who has Autism. There will be a change in the schedule for the next week due to testing. When a routine is broken, this student does not like the change and it causes him to act out. In order to help prevent the student from acting out I would notify the student as far in advance as I can. This would help prepare the student for the change in the routine. I would provide the student with the changed routine for the week. The new schedule will be displayed, with visuals and times, in order for this student to see the schedule. I would notify the parents of the change as well in order for them to help prepare the student.
- I have a student in my class who has Autism and does not like loud noises. When loud noises occur this student shuts down and starts to act out. At some point in the classroom some of the students can get rather chatty and loud. In order to help this student I will have a place in my classroom that this student can retreat to. In this area the student will have noise blocking earphones that can be worn if the classroom gets too loud. If I see this, I will remind the class they need to keep their voices down to allow the best learning environment for all students. After I quite the classroom down, I will go and talk to the student.
